Tracking Sustainability
At Elvaco, our position is clear: we want to drive the transition towards a greener and more sustainable tomorrow by providing leading smart metering solutions.
As an organization, we strive to develop sustainable solutions for our customers, employees, and the environment. In our opinion, companies that do not actively work with sustainability today will not meet the needs of tomorrow. That is why we aim to integrate sustainability in all we do; we do not have a sustainability strategy – we have a sustainable business strategy!
In 2022, we performed a climate screening to analyse our environmental impact and found that more than 85 percent of our CO2 emissions were in Scope 3 (indirect emissions), outside of our direct control. That has a lot to do with the fact that we outsource all our production. To gain more knowledge, Elvaco performed an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), which is a means to increase our knowledge of the environmental footprint of our products, from raw material and manufacturing to end-of-life and recycling. To learn how to create an EPD, we started with a single product – an integrated meter connectivity module that is installed in heat meters. It is a small module, basically a chip with some components, but it provides a way to begin understanding our impact.
We have gathered all necessary data from suppliers and customers and completed the life cycle analysis required for the EPD. In April 2023, the EPD was verified by an independent third party. It took us some time to find someone to verify it for us, we are pretty early adopters with EPDs for this type of product.
Based on the EPD, we have found that early design choices on materials and components affect the environmental impact most. This will be a good guide for us in future product designs, enabling us to reduce our climate impact early in product development. We are planning on creating EPDs for more products, and with the lessons we have learned this first time around, the process should go much smoother the next time.
