Elvaco and Digimondo create automated end-to-end solutions for network optimization.

Jonas Thiel, Head of Business Development at Digimondo GmbH, and Markus Drexler, Managing Director of Elvaco GmbH, formalize a strategic partnership at the E-world 2025 trade fair.

Strategic partnership for future-proof and interoperable solutions for cross-sector remote meter reading.

Elvaco GmbH and Digimondo GmbH, a leading provider of IoT solutions, announce their strategic partnership. The goal of this collaboration is to provide energy suppliers and municipal utilities with a seamless, interoperable, and future-proof solution for remote meter reading. The focus is on automating the entire process chain – from data collection to billing and integration into other specialist systems.

The benefits for utilities: a legally compliant solution that enables significant efficiency gains and real-time monitoring. Additionally, the manufacuturer-independent and cross-sector approach ensures a short payback period as well as a future-proof and scalable solution. Interoperability is the key to network digitalization and compliance with regulatory requirements.

The Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) requires utilities to use remotely readable, technology-open meters and to provide consumption information on a monthly basis. At the same time, demands on the collection, processing, and management of measurement data are increasing—driven by regulations on energy efficiency and climate protection. This development is leading to a growing demand for metering gateways at Elvaco and an increased use of remotely readable meters within Digimondo's Niotix platform solution.

Technology-Open, Standardized, and Manufacutrer-Independent

The partnership between Digimondo and Elvaco is built on open technology choices, standardized radio protocols and data transmission, and a manufacutrer-independent approach. This ensures maximum flexibility for municipal utilities in remote meter reading. By integrating the Elvaco Edge gateway and Elvaco meter connectivity modules into Digimondo’s platform, seamless and automated data collection across various wireless technologies—LoRaWAN, wM-Bus, and NB-IoT—is enabled. This breaks down existing data silos, reduces manual processes and IT overhead, and makes municipal utilities independent of proprietary systems. The recent successful implementation of the IoT protocol LwM2M by Elvaco and Digimondo further underscores this standardized approach.

Markus Drexler, Managing Director of Elvaco GmbH: "As a provider of holistic metering solutions, we work closely with partners to enable end-to-end system solutions. It is particularly important to us that our partners share the values of our company. We want to offer our customers seamless integration of our sensors, meter connectivity modules, and gateways into their processes. Our goal is not only to make remote meter reading as simple as possible but also to empower our customers to optimize their networks based on real-time data. With Digimondo, we see this vision ideally realized: In addition to our shared customer base in the utility and municipal sectors, we are united by a commitment to open technology, interoperability, and a strong focus on optimizing customer processes in metering."

Jonas Thiel, Head of Business Development at Digimondo: "As an established platform provider, we rely on well-designed and secure hardware from partners like Elvaco. The Elvaco Edge Gateway for wM-Bus perfectly complements the Elvaco LoRaWAN connectivity modules, which have already been deployed tens of thousands of times.

With the recent integration of the LwM2M backend into the Digimondo platform, we are enabling centralized device management for NB-IoT meters and wM-Bus gateways within a single application for the first time. Our municipal utility customers benefit from this open and flexible approach through efficient, technology-open meter rollouts and an intelligent, highly available, and economically superior solution for remote meter reading—especially when compared to proprietary systems."

Automated Remote Meter Reading – Use Case: Fixed Networks

The partnership between Digimondo and Elvaco enables municipal utilities to digitalize the entire process chain of measurement data collection. Fixed networks—large-scale reading infrastructures—can be operated efficiently and utilized across different utility sectors with this solution. Thanks to the advanced technical capabilities of Elvaco’s devices, which go beyond market standards, meter data is automatically collected and made available in Niotix. The use of a mixed technology approach in wireless communication leads to significant savings in hardware, operational, and process costs. In large network areas with numerous gateways, it is particularly crucial to combine different communication technologies to ensure maximum availability of measurement data.

Reliable Measurement Data Transmission in Large Network Areas

Markus Drexler explains:

"Even in extensive networks, the collection and transmission of measurement data must function reliably. We provide Elvaco products with various technologies such as wM-Bus, M-Bus, and LoRaWAN for hybrid networks to close gaps in data collection. This ensures that meter reading rates of up to 100% are achieved and that all measurement data is reliably transmitted to the customer’s specialist systems."

The Elvaco Edge metering gateway is particularly suited for large network areas. It captures both wired meters and sensors according to the M-Bus standard EN-13757, as well as OMS-compliant wireless meters and sensors. These gateways can be managed remotely via Niotix. With its integrated SIM card, the Elvaco Edge enables remote access at any time for configuration and firmware updates. Initially, the gateway detects all available meters and sensors based on predefined filters. The intelligent interaction between gateway and software then optimizes the entire network based on the required measurement data and resolution. This includes individually adjustable upload intervals and automatic selection of the gateway with the best reception as the primary receiving device. As a result, Digimondo and Elvaco’s joint solution significantly reduces operating costs.

Jonas Thiel emphasizes:

"With Digimondo’s software solution for remote meter reading, measurement data can be leveraged far beyond the regulatory requirements of the EED. Our customers gain greater transparency by capturing operational data specifically for network management. At the same time, they reduce manual routine tasks through automated reading processes and increase operational efficiency. Moreover, the optimized processing of measurement data allows for faster responses to disruptions or inefficiencies—such as excessively high flow temperatures."
